Pilates is a form of exercise which emphasizes the muscles of the “core”, or abdomen, lower back and buttocks. Its founder, Joseph Pilates originally called it "contrology.” The Pilates Method is considered to be a mind & body approach to movement, using centering, concentration, control, precision, breath, and flow.
From doing Pilates you can expect to create a stronger core, have better posture, improved mind-body awareness & greater flexibilty. You might also feel relief from back pain. The workout is challenging yet easy on your joints. You will get an education in body awareness which you can take back to your daily life, whether sitting at a desk or lugging children around.
Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1880. While living in England he was placed in forced internment at the outbreak of WWI. In the internment camp he began to develop the floor exercises that evolved into what we now know as the Pilates Mat Work.
As a child JosephPilates was frail, suffering from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever. He overcame his physical limitations with exercise.
Joseph Pilates brought his revolutionary method of mind-body exercising to the United States in 1926. His exercise studio in New York City caught the attention of the dance community by the 1940s because the Pilates method was particularly good at healing dancing injuries, fast. Pilates has recently taken off in the world of non- dancers.
Mr. Pilates taught in New York from 1926 to 1966. He passed away in 1967at the age of 87
"A few well-designed movements, properly performed in a balanced sequence, are worth hours of doing sloppy calisthenics or forced contortion."
